Negative Pull

BY MADISYN TAYLOR
thank you to the DailyOM

We always have the option to not participate in negativity or to find a way to create a positive direction instead.Sometimes we start out with the best intentions to think and speak only positive thoughts, but the people around us throw us off course. Not everyone fully understands the power our thoughts and words have, or even if they do, they may be stuck in old patterns of negativity. Much of our habitual communication takes the form of complaining and criticizing, and it can be hard to find a way into certain conversations without lapsing into those old habits. However, we always have the option not to participate in negativity or to find a way to influence the situation in a positive direction. In the right company, you may even be able to directly acknowledge the fact that things have taken a negative turn, thus freeing yourself and others from the negative pull.

Not everyone will respond to your cues, and there’s no need to become overly attached to the idea of changing other people, because people have to choose for themselves how they will be in the world. Many people choose negativity because it is familiar to them and feels safe. It is important to give people the space to find their own way, but you can always set an example, subtly representing the power of being positive. At times you may interject an affirmative statement into the conversation, and at others you may simply change the subject. You may also simply withdraw your energy and presence, which also makes a subtle statement. If you feel comfortable enough with somebody that is always negative, perhaps you can have an honest conversation with them; after all, awareness is the first step to change.

A powerful way to free yourself from the negative pull is to enlist allies who are similarly minded. You and a friend, coworker, or family member may agree to work together to continually shift the energy in a situation in a positive direction. The power of two people working to promote the positive is exponentially greater than one person working on their own. As you and your allies work together to lift the energy around you, you will be amazed to see how quickly the positive pull begins to draw people into its orbit, freeing one mind after another from negativity into light.

What if it was Easy?

All my life, and for most of you, all of yours, we have been told that if we work hard, knuckle down, nose to the grindstone and all those other old sayings AND we will achieve success.

But is that really the case?

I know that I worked hard to achieve success in sport, but that was about being fit and the level of fitness required was well above that of the ordinary person in the street, so I get that. And by the way it felt really good to be that fit. Oh to be there now…LOL! But it was fun in the most part and it didn’t feel all that hard as it was something we did regularly (Although some of those hills in the pre-season weren’t that easy).

But what if it was meant to be easy?

Do you know people in your life that have worked hard all their lives, only to just get by? And others who seem to never really work that hard, they get to play and travel a lot and have nary a worry in the world.

What is the difference?

For one, the second group have a completely different outlook on what is required to be successful. For instance, they expect good things to happen for and to them. Guess what? They happen!

The first group on the other hand have a view of life where struggle is expected and that is what they get. They probably actually work longer hours, they stress more, yet never seem to catch up.

I have written over the last few weeks about knowing where you want to get to, focusing on that and that is part of it. (Check out https://belieffirst.wordpress.com/2020/01/22/life-is-a-mirror/ to understand this better). It is also about expectation and not getting distracted by alternatives that take your focus elsewhere, or getting taken into negative situations by your reaction to various situations/events, or people who are being negative.

The old saying, it is hard to soar like an eagle, when you are surrounded by turkeys comes to mind at this point.

The easy bit comes from having a clear mind, focused on what it is you want, expecting that it will come to pass and not being taken off course by other shiny objects or negative people/situations and feeling good at the same time. Feelings and emotions have a very big part to play in all of this.

So breathe in the good air and feel good, that is a start.

If you think it is easy, this to shall come to pass.

How Vs Why? Which Question to use and When!

Albert Einstein

It is interesting that when we talk to most people and we suggest a way to change what is possible or suggest something new that may change their future, the first question they ask… or their first thought is HOW can I do it or HOW can I get it done?

The funny thing is that these same people use the light switch to light a room or drive their car without giving it a second thought about how the engine works or the light is delivered.

But offer them a way to change their life, and they ask HOW?

A better question for them would be WHY would I want to do that. Once they have thought through WHY they would pursue a course of action to achieve a certain result and have internalised those reasons, they are much more likely to do what they need to do, than if they get caught up in trying to work out HOW they could achieve whatever it is you are speaking about.

The WHY or Reason is attached to your dream. The HOW Is not anywhere near as important.

The HOW question is attached to your ego and our wish to be in control, or be the sole determinant of our success. The WHY question is about creativity, intuition, Source or divine intervention. It is about not having to know the whole thing (which isn’t really possible). It is more about strong belief in your ability to be your best. It requires an element of trust and faith in the first instance, however, the better you get at it, the more you will manifest your many desires. (Thanks Harrison)

Dream, Dream, Dream….

The funny thing, is that is how it works looking into the future.

If you look back in the past the reverse is true. If we ask WHY about a past event or happening, what we are looking at is to apportion blame, or find a reason that something happened. What this tends to do is get you stuck in the problem, and as Albert Einstein said, “the thinking that created the problem generally won’t solve the problem.”

So the better question to ask about a past event that was not a positive, is HOW do we prevent that from happening again. In the past, the HOW question gets you focused on moving forward.

So in essence, to look forward WHY is the right question.

to look back, but not get stuck. HOW (do i not do that again, or get that result again, or if it is a positive, HOW do we get a similar or same result), is the right question.

Have a great week, and tell me if this helps

Do you know where you are going?

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

A lot of the time people complain or comment on the things they don’t like about something, someplace or other people. However, when questioned what is it they want/desire, rather talking about what they don’t want, they can’t actually tell you.

Or they launch into some grandiose scheme of luxury cars, trips to amazing places and huge houses. However, when questioned on the specifics of what it is they are after, they then become hazy or vague, as if they are not really sure. And in most cases they aren’t.

We have all been told to dream big and that we can have anything we want (and we can), there is of course some things we need to do or be, before they will come to fruition. One of these is to have real clarity about your goals/desires.

The reason I use the term desires is that to want something means you come from a position of lack. (Definition:a lack or deficiency of something.), Whereas to desire something implies that there is feeling and emotion, eg Something that you really desire is…? For me that elicits some positive energy. And that is what is required to achieve your desires.

It is not enough to sit there and want something. It is about getting an energetic connection with the object of your desires. To feel really excited or passionate about what it is you are after. To sit in solitude and ponder on what it is you desire, seeing yourself already with that object/place and feeling what it would be like to have achieved that goal. The more specificity in your vision, the quicker you can manifest it.

Manifesting your desires is like everything else you have ever learned, it usually takes time and practice to achieve the great things. Depending on how old you are, there are years and years of thinking otherwise that have to be reversed. Kids on the other hand are wonderful manifesters, largely because they don’t have the fear of failure, or the doubts that come with being an adult to hold them back.

So back to my first question, Do you know where you are going? If you want to have certainty about where you are going and what you will achieve, have and be, then you need to spend some time clarifying in your mind, what it is you truly desire and then spend time getting energetically (emotionally – emotions are energy in motion) connected to those things, events or people.

Good luck and if you have any challenges, email me on dunny1@me.com.

The Uncertainty of What You Should Be Working on Right Now

from Zen Habits

I read this blog today and thought it was too good not to share. I have been reading some of Leo’s stuff for over 10 years. Great attitude and approach. It was what I was thinking about writing about it today, however, after reading this I thought it was very appropriate to share.

BY LEO BABAUTA

I was talking with a friend who very often doesn’t feel he has a clear direction in life, doesn’t operate on any solid principles, and usually doesn’t feel he’s clear on what he should be doing at any given moment.

I completely relate to this difficulty: it’s the uncertainty of what you should be doing at this moment, or today, or in life. We feel this uncertainty all the time as stress, anxiety, fear — or simply the feeling that we’re doing things wrong.

So I’d like to share how I’m working with this uncertainty … a small number of ideas I learned from Zen and from playing the game of Go (a Chinese strategy game more complex than chess, played with black and white stones on a 19×19 grid).

In short, the ideas are:

  1. Keep the whole board in mind.
  2. Play one stone at a time.
  3. Dance with the uncertainty.
  4. Leave no trace.

Let’s look at each of them — they’ve been incredibly helpful to me.

Keep the Whole Board in Mind

First, a disclaimer — I’m terrible at Go. I’m a beginner, though maybe an intermediate beginner. That said, I have learned some things that are important.

One big one is to play with a “whole-board” mindset. Most of us beginners get too caught up in the local situation — in your daily life, that’s looking at the messages and emails coming in, being responsive to tasks as they come up.

The best Go players play with the bigger picture in mind — what does the whole board call for in this situation?

For our daily lives, that means bringing the big picture into the decision-making process. What does your life require right now? What matters most to you? What would have the biggest impact on the things that you care most about? Do you have meaningful work, people you serve, a purpose, a mission, a direction? Think about that a bit, and use that to guide your decisions.

What matters to you? What can you do this week, today, right now, that will have an impact on that?

You don’t have to have a certain answer to any of these questions. Just come back to the bigger questions as you make smaller decisions, so you’re not just being reactive.

So as I finish this one task and think about the next task, instead of acting on impulse and responding to things coming in … I should think of the big picture and choose based on that.

That leads us to the next idea …

Play One Stone at a Time

When I play Go, I see like 10 big moves where I’d like to play my stone. I can only play one move right now though, because after I play a stone, my opponent gets to play their stone (of opposite color).

So the idea I’ve learned is this: I can only play one stone at a time … so I have to play the biggest move out of the dozen or so I’d like to play right now.

Right now, you probably have a dozen or two things you could be doing. You might wish you could do them all at once, and have them all be done in the next hour. But you can’t! You can only do one task at a time. You can only play one stone right now.

So, with the big picture in mind … which task would be the most important one you could do? You don’t have to have a super clear answer to that, but use that question to guide your choice. Let the others go for now, and play those stones one at a time with each move you have.

You have one stone to play — just pick one based on your gut, with the whole board in mind, and let go of the rest. Let go of the need for that choice to be certain …

Dance with the Uncertainty

You can keep the whole board in mind, and try to choose the most important task to do right now … but not really know which to choose.

That’s OK. No one ever really knows. Not in Go, not in life. There’s never any certainty.

So we have to learn to be OK with the uncertainty of it. Pick what feels right, based on our gut intuition. Which will do the most good, which will have the most impact, which will ease the most pain in our lives and the lives of others?

These kind of questions can guide us in the uncertainty, but we won’t ever eliminate the uncertainty. No system or set of rules will ever eliminate the uncertainty.

So let’s dance with it. Explore it like adventurers wandering into unknown territory. With curiosity, with wonder, with delight.

Play in the middle of the uncertainty. Let yourself bring joy and lightheartedness into it. And just play the stone, curious to see what might emerge.

Leave No Trace

Now you’ve chosen the stone to play … and you’re dancing with the uncertainty … it’s time to dive into it completely.

Do this task as if there were no other task in the universe. As Suzuki Roshi said in Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind, leave no trace of yourself. Let yourself burn up completely in the task.

This practice is about being completely in the task, not thinking about yourself but just being there, doing it. As if you’re one with everything as you do it, egoless and free of the burden of thinking about yourself (which we do a lot of the time).

If that’s too confusing, just try to be completely with the task. Lose yourself in it.

So those are the ideas …

Keep the big picture in mind as you choose what to do.

Pick the most important task that you can work on right now, with the big picture in mind.

Play in the middle of the uncertainty of that task.

And be completely with the task.

Do You Know

Do you know or do you think you Know?

Interesting question.

The reason I ask is that when you know something and I mean really know it, it is very powerful. Knowing something is more powerful than believing something. Believing in something inherently implies that there is still some doubt, however, small that may be.

What I am going to do is challenge some of what you think you know that could be holding you back.

Knowing means there is no doubt. So when someone is trying to convince you of something, or sell you something, do they really Know or do they just believe in what they are trying to sell you on?

Some little things that you know with complete confidence are your eye colour, for most guys there hair colour (sorry ladies – too much changing of colours to be completely confident!) You know your birthday. You know where you live.

Easy right, then we go into more complex areas and the challenge is do you know or do you believe. For instance, and this might get a little touchy for some. The political party you support, even I am not sure on this one. I know I believe about certain issues, can I guarantee that I know with certainty, probably not.

Spirituality for some also falls into this basket; Science and some of their claims for many fall into this basket.

So what is it that you really know? Spend some time and think about this. When you get to something that you think you know, ask how you know. Question the result you get. Challenge its veracity. If you are not sure, do some research, there is so much information online, I am sure you can find some evidence either way.

The reason I have gone down this path is that there are a lot of things we say to ourselves constantly that influence what we do and how we feel. Many of them are not true and have been carried with us for a long time because someone said something to us once and because they were in a position of power and influence on us, we believed it and have continued to ever since.

Such things as “You’ll never amount to much” (unworthiness); You are too small/slow/fat/clumsy (how many kids carry this with them for years?); “You’re not smart enough to do that” (unworthiness again), are carried with people for the rest of their lives, especially when said to young children and teenagers, whose minds are like play dough and take in everything that is said to them – unfortunately to stay with them and influence their own self talk for many years to come.

So again I ask you the first question, what is it that you know? Write down a list and if the items on the list are not working for you or are limiting in any way, challenge them. What would the opposite of that be? Write that down, which one is right? Which one will give you a better life from this moment forward?

My suggestion is to start believing in the outcome that gives the better result and if it isn’t true right now, work towards it becoming true so in the future you can say with 100% confidence that you know it.

Interested in hearing your thoughts.

Have an awesome day!

Happiness

Image by Gino Crescoli from Pixabay

Who determines whether we are happy or not?

Is it us, or the people around us?

Many people would respond it is based on others, however, operating from the point of view that we create our own reality, is happiness therefore based on how you turn up, or respond to various people/situations/factors?

I am operating from the point of view that it is up to me whether I am happy or not. It is not based on external factors or my response to them.

This can be a little confronting for many people who are not in the life situation they would like to be. In that situation, we have been taught in many ways, that we need someone to blame for it.

Someone cuts me off in traffic – therefore I am justified in yelling at them, and then recounting the story to others (to perpetuate the negativity) for hours after. If it didn’t result in an action, did it really matter? Did it require us to be negative for the period of time after that we focused on it? In both cases probably not. And as with the old quote about hate and the effect it has on the other person, the driver of the other car is none the wiser and therefore your negativity has only impacted you and those you have shared it with.

Another way to handle it is to send the other person some love and light and get on with the things that are really important to you. Like the big dreams and goals you are chasing. In the bigger scheme, focusing on them will have an infinitely bigger impact (and more positive) on your life.

In his book, The Resilience Project, by Hugh Van Cuylenburg, Hugh refers to a student in his class in an Indian school in far north India named Stanzin, who seemed to have found the secret to happiness. He appreciated and was grateful for everything.

In talking with my mentor we discovered what I already knew deep down. When talking about most things, I feel the need to share all the details (which frustrates my wife and people who have known me forever) and part of this is focusing on the negative bits, to the extent of glossing over the positive elements. Why?

It is not helpful to talk about the negatives or to keep talking about them.

My focus now is to share the positives with people and look for something in everything or situation to appreciate. Much like the student in Hugh’s story, if this is achieved, you will be happy.

Western societies (any many others in the last 50 years) are now focused on achieving more, nothing is ever good enough, others always have more than us and therefore, we have incredibly high rates of depression and suicide in societies that are so far progressed from where they were 200 years ago. Unfortunately, that progress hasn’t translated into higher levels of happiness, if anything they have translated into greater isolation, depression and unhappiness.

There is a great quote – many people are working in jobs they don’t like to earn money to buy things they don’t need to impress people they don’t like…pretty sad really.

Happiness is an inside thing. What can you do to be more happy? What is there in your life to appreciate? Stop worrying about what you don’t have. Focus on what you can do to change your situation and then you might find the answers you are looking for.

Enjoy the day and find something to appreciate!

Getting what you want.

In western societies we have all been told that if we work hard we will end up getting what we want.

However, in most western countries, people work hard all their lives and do what they are told in terms of saving for their retirement. Some do really well, most do not. They actually end up in retirement having enough money to get by and not much more. So if they have done all that they have been told, why is this so.

I am not going to get into the economics or political side of these issues.

In reality, it is because we have fallen for the story that we need to work hard. So we work hard.

In reality we all know people who seem to get by with everything happening for them in a seemingly easy fashion. They don’t try hard, they don’t seem to work hard. It is frustrating sometimes watching them achieve what they do without seeming to put in the effort.

How is this so?

The secret is to get in tune with your energy field. This sounds a little airy fairy for some people, but stick with me.

We have discussed in earlier posts that everything is energy and we are all part of the same energy field. Things come together for you when you get in alignment with the energy of what it is you are after.

For many this sounds too esoteric and weird. So it is about believing that what you want is actually achievable. A lot of us have been told that you need to dream big and focus on what it is you want to get what you want. We also get told that you need to plan out what it is you need to do to get what you want.

In reality, part of this is correct. DREAM BIG, maybe BIGGER!

The next part is the bit that is not taught to most of us. You need to focus on what it is you want at the end and the trick to getting it is to actually feel what it would be like to be in that position. If it is being outside, can you feel the wind in your hair, the sun on your skin? How do you feel having achieved what you really wanted? Is there someone there that you want to share this with?

The more you get in the feeling of the moment and you believe it is real, the more likely it is you will get it.

DON’T WORRY ABOUT HOW IT WILL HAPPEN!

Focusing on the how, will take you off course.

There is a great rule I heard years ago. It is the 1/10/89 rule.

1% is the stuff you know – really know – like the colour of your hair.

10% is the stuff you don’t know; and

89% is the stuff you don’t know you don’t know!

So trying to work out how everything is going to work out is beyond the normal human.

Stepping back and focusing on what it is you want – and feeling what it would be like to have achieved it, (not resisting that it is possible) and doing what you feel is right for you to do, you will be where you want to BE!

BE – DO – HAVE!

Go out and allow what it is you want to happen, be the person you need to be to allow that to happen.

Go have fun!

Stay the Course

How many of us have started something – a diet, fitness regime, study course, etc. and never finished it. In lots of cases never gotten past the 2nd or 3rd week?

Plenty I would guess.

Why is that?

We started for some perfectly good reasons:

  • We wanted to look/feel better;
  • We wanted to know something more;
  • Get a better job, or improve our career prospects;
  • To feel better about ourselves
  • etc

Yet, we stopped. Why?

Good question that why!

Mostly, it is because we started out with a great reason or reasons, yet we didn’t do it with feeling. We aren’t emotionally connected with the outcomes we started out to achieve.

Think of the difference between something where you are passionate and emotionally connected to the outcome and something where you just think its a good idea, or someone else puts you up to it – so you aren’t connected emotionally. Invariably, you will get much further down the path, if not all the way in the first case, whereas you probably end up in the scenario described at the start of this article in relation to the second example.

So if we know that is the case, how can we use that knowledge to stay the course?

Spending time reminding yourself about the reasons why, and I mean getting into the emotional state that is the reason behind your effort. Thinking about how you will feel when you get there; what others will say about you; what difference it will have on your life. We can also set up reminders throughout the day and in your various environments to make sure we don’t go off course and spend time focusing on the end result.

If you are really serious about achieving something, then it is up to you to make sure that you give yourself the best chance of achieving it. Not feeling bad when the first obstacle presents itself – maybe someone offering you some chocolate – but feeling good when you resist it and stay the course.

The more you can use your feelings (in a positive way) to keep you on course, the easier it will be. It is generally, getting past the first 21 days that is the hardest. Knowing that, set yourself up to win, by limiting opportunities to go off track in that time frame.

Keep on keeping on

All the best

How do you stay on Track?

Oh what a beautiful morning!

So we have been talking about implementing all these tools/methods to have a better life. How do we maintain the rage?

The reason I am writing this is I have been working with a particular mentor since July – originally weekly for 8 weeks, then a rest and weekdays for the last two weeks. Great results in terms of changes in the way I am thinking and acting and believing.

Yesterday was a great day. A lot of appreciable changes and great results. Then today, not so good. I was pondering this later this afternoon and realised it was due to a lack of awareness of where I was, what I was doing. The old habits took over in lots of cases. This can be because the environment (out of habit) elicits familiar responses or ways of behaving.

Looking back on the difference in the two days was that even though they started the same way, there was a decidedly different approach after the start. For one I didn’t exercise today – it was pouring – thank god for the rain we sorely needed it, however, it is not conducive to walking or riding.

Secondly, I didn’t really have a plan for the day as the afternoon event I was attending was postponed – yes the rain again. So I tended to waste a bit of the day and fell into some bad habits. Good lesson. Make sure I am creating throughout the day, that is, being aware of my thinking/energy/focus.

So whilst it was not a great day in relation to yesterday, it was a good day in that as part of my journey of evolving to “the Real Paul Dunn”, I have learned another invaluable lesson.

It is not enough to just tick the boxes of meditating, reading, completing my appreciation journal, I also need to be aware of my thoughts and focus throughout the day.

So in answer to the question in the title.

  • Know what you are after – goals, dreams, aspirations – what is your purpose for the day?
  • Make sure you remind yourself through the day about your energy levels, like “sourcing up” and thinking about the outcomes you are looking for from meetings before the meeting or any other conversations, even phone calls.
  • Reflect on the results straight away so they don’t get lost.

I hope this helps you as much as writing it helps me.
